Australia Tightens the Genuine Student (GS) Requirement for Subclass 500

Published 18 April 2026

The Department of Home Affairs has refined the Genuine Student requirement and updated English-language thresholds for subclass 500 visas.

What Changed?

The GS requirement now demands stronger evidence of study purpose. Financial capacity thresholds and English-language minimums for the subclass 500 student visa have been raised.

Who Is Affected?

All applicants for the Australian student visa (subclass 500), including dependants and those switching from visitor or working-holiday streams onshore.

Recommended Action

Prepare a clear, evidence-based study plan statement, gather updated proof of funds, and confirm your English test result meets the latest threshold for your course.

Australia's Department of Home Affairs continues to refine the Genuine Student (GS) requirement that replaced the previous Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) test. Applicants must now answer targeted questions about their study plans, ties to home country, and post-study intentions.

Financial capacity evidence has been increased again, and English-language requirements for direct-entry student visas have been adjusted upward.
